Home remedies for bleeding gums

Bleeding gums are evidence of weak dental hygiene. Bleeding of gums occurs from inadequate plaque removal. Read on to know how to cure bleeding gums using home remedies.

Causes of bleeding gums:

The formation of plaque on your gum line leads to gingivitis which is the result of poor dental hygiene. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. After the formation of the plaque on teeth, it produces acids after we eat or drink anything. These acids damage teeth enamel and cause gingivitis and cavities. If the plaque extends to your gum line, it may destroy your teeth roots and even break down the bones that may damage your teeth.

Home remedies:

Here, we will be discussing some of the home remedies for bleeding gums:

  • Turmeric:

Every Indian kitchen has turmeric. Turmeric is the most essential ingredient for many home remedies because it has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Apply turmeric paste (turmeric + water) on bleeding gums and leave it on for few minutes. Later, rinse it with water.
  • Or else make a paste of turmeric powder with mustard oil and apply it to your bleeding gums for 10 minutes. Later, rinse it with water.
  • Repeat any one of these methods twice a day.

Turmeric helps in lowering the inflammation caused by bleeding gums.

  • Salt Water:

Salt has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties which help in lowering swelling, inflammation, and combat infections that lead to bleeding gums. It is one of the most effective, easiest, and simplest home remedies.

  • Add 1 tsp of salt in 1 glass of lukewarm water and mix it well until the salt dilutes.
  • Make sure you gargle with this water thrice a day. The water shouldn’t be too hot. It may lead to scalding.
  • Honey:

Honey has both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help in killing bacteria causing bleeding gums.

  • Take few drops of honey onto your fingertips and massage it on your bleeding gums
  • Apply honey to your gums twice a day.

This method takes time to cure but helps in the long run.

  • Lemon Juice:

Lemon juice is acidic like few other fruit juices. Its pH level is 2-3 which means it helps in keeping away plaque/bacterial infection and cures bleeding gums. Applying direct lemon juice causes enamel erosion and the weakening of gums. So,

  • Add a cup of water to half a lemon juice and then apply it to the affected area.
  • Use this solution to rinse your mouth after every meal.
  • Ginger:

Ginger helps in fighting gum diseases like gingivitis by balancing the acids formed by bacteria. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help in treating infection caused by gum bleeding.

  • Finely grate ginger and squeeze out its juice and apply it to your inflamed gums.
  • Massage gently and leave it on for 10 -15 minutes.
  • Later, rinse your mouth with water.
  • Repeat this solution twice a day.
  • Baking soda:

Baking soda is the most effective and inexpensive product available. It is also readily available in toothpaste. It contains the most powerful antibacterial property that kills bacteria and also helps in whitening teeth. It removes plaque from teeth and also balances pH levels in the mouth. Baking soda best for bleeding gums.

  • Add 1tsp of baking soda to a cup of lukewarm water.
  • Gargle your mouth with this solution once or twice a day. Later, rinse your mouth with cold water.
  • Repeat it after every meal.
  • Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera is beat for curing inflammation. If your gums are red and inflamed then aloe vera is the best to apply. It has extremely high healing power. Its anti-bacterial properties help in getting rid of oral pathogens that are the core cause of gingivitis.

  • Take little pulp of aloe vera on your fingers and gently massage it onto your inflamed gums.
  • Leave it on for few minutes before washing your mouth with water.
  • You can apply this twice or thrice a day.
  • Tea Bags:

Teabags contain a compound called tannic acid which does wonders to cure gum diseases. All thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in killing bacteria and stops bleeding. If there is a lot of bleeding from your teeth, the dentist suggests biting on a moist tea bag for few minutes. This aids in forming a blood clot.

  • Put the teabag in hot water for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bag and let it cool for some time.
  • Place tea bag directly onto your gums for 5 minutes.
  • Repeat this once or twice a day.
  • Clove oil:

Clove oil has contains the most essential ingredient called eugenol that possesses both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that helps in removing plaque and lowering inflammation. It helps in curing gingivitis.

  • Add 2 drops of clove oil to 1tsp of coconut oil.
  • Dab cotton balls into the mixture and apply them to your bleeding gums.
  • Leave it on for 5-10 minutes.
  • Cinnamon Oil:

Just like Clove oil this oil also contains anti-bacterial properties that have the ability to combat bacteria in your mouth that causes dental plaque.

  • Add 2 drops of cinnamon oil to 1tsp of coconut oil.
  • Dab cotton balls into the mixture and apply them to your bleeding gums.
  • Leave it on for 5-10 minutes.
  • Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a rediscovered oral health fad. We call it rediscovered because it has been already used in ancient ayurvedic practice. Now, people started endorsing it with spirited glee. Oil pulling helps in preventing gingivitis and periodontitis that causes swollen, red gums, and gum bleeding.

  • Coconut oil contains anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties which help treat swollen and bleeding gums.
  • Swish coconut oil in your mouth for 10-15 minutes and then spit it out.
  • Rinse your mouth with water properly.
  • Repeat this once or twice a day.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash

Hydrogen Peroxide helps in increasing roughness on the enamel surface which prevents the formation of plaque on teeth. It has anti-bacterial properties that help in treating gum diseases.

  • Take 10ml of Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash and rinse your mouth
  • Repeat this once or twice a day.
  • Consult your dentist before using it.
  • Neem

Majorly in India, neem twigs are still used to wash teeth on daily basis in rural areas. Neem has many anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties that help in reducing gum bleeding. Extracted neem oil is used as a mouthwash and helps in preventing plaque on teeth.

  • Apply few drops of neem oil on your teeth and leave it on for few minutes.
  • Rinse it off after few minutes.
  • Repeat this once or twice a day.
  • Sage leaf

Sage leaves contain anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties. This helps in curing gum diseases and removing plaque from teeth.

  • Boil 40-50 fresh sage leaves with water.
  • Remove the sage leaves and use the remaining water as a mouthwash.
  • Gargle your mouth with this water several times a day. You can also have this as a tea.
  • Fruits and vegetables

Fresh fruits and vegetables are not only good for overall health but also useful for curing gum diseases. Fresh and raw fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals and low in calories. Chewing fresh and raw fruits help in improving blood circulating in gums. Thus, this helps in reducing gum bleeding. This skin of raw fruits and vegetables helps in preventing plaque formation.

  • Ground Cayenne Red Pepper:

Listening to the name itself is very scary and reminds me of the pungent pepper smell. Isn’t it? Cayenne pepper powder has antimicrobial, antioxidants, and anti-bacterial pain-relieving and bacteria-killing properties. It also helps in lowering swelling and gum inflammation.

  • Take a pinch of Cayenne Red Pepper powder and apply it directly to your teeth. Use this as a substitute for your toothbrush.
  • Try this one or twice a day.
  • Brushing and Flossing:

As they say “Prevention is better than cure”. If you don’t want to wait till you get gum inflammation then start brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing properly. This prevents your teeth from many gum-related problems and also whitens your teeth.
