Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two carotenoids (plant color pigments) that are essential for your eye health. Your eye is not only a very important part of your body but it is also a very sensitive one. Ultraviolet (UV) rays and blue light, the part of the visible light spectrum, can damage it in various ways.
Eyes have many parts and retina is one of them. The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. The purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition. Macula is the part of retina that is responsible for sharp, detailed central vision (also called visual acuity). Ultraviolet rays and harmful blue light can damage macula and consequently the retina. However, there is a protective covering over macula which filters out harmful light rays. This protective covering is made up of lutein and zeaxanthin.
These two carotenoids are also naturally good antioxidants and provide potent antioxidant support to the eye tissues. Your body can not make lutein and zeaxanthin and they must be obtained through food sources such as leafy green vegetables. It may be difficult to include green leafy vegetables in your diet every day. Pure Encapsulations provide easy solution with lutein/zeaxanthin supplement. Each capsule contains 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin.
