Carotenoids are compounds that give fruits and vegetables their bright colors. But that is not all. Carotenoids are also important for your body as they provide potent antioxidant support.
Lutein is one such carotenoid that is found in a vast number of fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, kale, corn, orange pepper, kiwi fruit, grapes, orange juice, zucchini, and squash. Lutein is unique in that it is one of only two carotenoids out of over 600 that is stored within the retina of eye where it promotes the integrity and density of the macular pigment (the part of the retina that is responsible for sharp, detailed central vision (also called visual acuity)). The macular pigment is a yellow-colored spot that acts like a pair of sunglasses in order to protect the macula from potentially harmful blue light. This carotenoid works to screen light while providing antioxidant protection from free radicals that can cause damage to the cells involved in vision.
Although lutein is found in various fruits and vegetables, taking sufficient amounts of this carotenoid through diet may not be easy.
