• The U.S. Public Health Service has recommended that women of childbearing age take a supplement containing 400 mcg of folic acid every day to reduce the risk of a pregnancy affected by neural tube defects defects of the brain, spine or spinal cord.

• It is recommended that women start taking folic acid before they become pregnant because neural tube defects usually occur in the first month of pregnancy before a woman even knows that she is pregnant.
