ColostOferrin, provided by Douglas Laboratories, is a combination of bovine colostrum, vitamin C, lactoferrin, arabinogalactan, and a proprietary blend of immune enhancing prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) and probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus.
After giving birth, a mother's body produces a special immune and growth promoting substance that is secreted into her milk. This fluid is produced for only the first 24 - 48 hours after giving birth, and is called colostrum. This special "pre-milk" is integral in providing a wide range of immunity-enhancing, immunological and growth promoting factors to the offspring. These factors include immunoglobins, transforming growth factors, and other compounds important to the health of the newborn.
Over the past number of years, research has shown that supplementation with bovine colostrum is able to positively modulate immune function and serve as a natural immunity booster in adults. Bovine colostrum can be used in place of human colostrum, as it is accepted and transferable to all other animals, including humans. Specifically, immunoglobins, including IgG, and other proteins such as lactoferrin contained in colostrum are thought to play an important role in this supplement's ability to enhance immune function and help our bodies fight infection. Recently, bovine colostrum has even been shown to have an important role in supporting gastrointestinal health. Douglas Laboratories' ColostOferrin provides 500 mg bovine colostrum from cattle raised without hormone treatment and in conditions free of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. In addition to bovine colostrum, ColostOferrin contains lactoferrin, vitamin C, and arabinogalactan. These ingredients are also important for the functioning of the immune system and for optimal health. Arabinogalactan have been shown to have remarkable activity in potentiating the reticuloendothelial system. These polysaccharides, also found in ginseng, have anti- complementary activity associated with increased phagocytosis in response to infection. Lactoferrin also improves the immune competence of cells when confronted with septic conditions. Lactoferrin not only exhibits positive regulatory actions on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with sepsis, but also modulates the inflammatory response to septic injury. Finally, our unique ColostOferrin formulation includes a proprietary blend of fructooligosaccharides and Lactobacillus acidophilus to support gastrointestinal health and maximize the beneficial properties of colostrum.
