They colonize different regions of the human intestine under normal conditions. In the upper intestine, L. acidophilus predominates. In the lower portion of the intestine, Bifidobacterium plays a major beneficial role. MicroCell HMF colonizes the human gastrointestinal tract because the HMF strain of acidophilus was isolated from human intestinal tract; it has a high affinity to the mucosal lining. HMF acidophilus binds effectively to human intestinal epithelium. In laboratory testing with human epithelial cell lines HMF acidophilus adhered 15 times more effectively than non-human derived acidophilus (Fig1).
