Its yellow-orange rhizome has been used in Ayurveda medicine for over two thousand years to treat inflamed joints and other age-related degenerative conditions. The active constituent in turmeric is the flavonoid curcumin. This substance has been shown to protect cellular DNA from environmental toxins thereby helping to allay inflammation and other cellular damage.
