The Base for an Essential Coenzyme Pantethine is a metabolite of pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5. Pantethine is required for the production of coenzyme A (CoA), an all-important nutrient in many cellular functions including energy production, detoxification, and hormone biosynthesis. Healthy Heart, Liver and Adrenals Pantethine supports healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. As a precursor for CoA, it has other important roles as well. CoA is needed for the production of stress hormones. Stress depletes the body of vitamin B5, but supplementation with pantethine quickly restores adrenal hormone production. CoA is also required for the detoxification of various potentially dangerous substances, and it protects the liver from chemical damage. When the Limit is Not Enough Pantothenic acid itself is only needed in order to be converted to pantethine, the active form of vitamin B5. This conversion is carefully regulated in the body and reaches a maximum at a certain level. Unfortunately, in some people this maximum is not enough for optimal health. Supplementing with pantothenic acid will do no good in this situation, but taking pantethine itself bypasses the regulatory mechanisms, ensuring that the benefits of this vitamin are fully delivered.
