Description
Originally from Madagascar, this evergreen and very aromatic tree can reach 5 m high. In Malagasy, Mandravasarotra means “who keeps evil away”. It is the plant most used by the populations of the west of the island. In this region of Sakalava, it is called either Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, that is to say “great fire in the bowels” because its entire aerial part has a spicy and burning flavor. But it is also called, depending on the different Malagasy dialects, Fanalamangidy “which removes bitterness” or Mangidymanitra “which smells of bitterness” or Sakarivohazo “ginger wood” or Sakaihazo “chili pepper wood”.
