Slippery Elm Bark is the bark of the Slippery Elm tree. A tree in the Elm family that can live up to 200 years old. It is known and valued for its bark which played an important part in the lives of the Native Americans. The bark was used by the Meskwaki tribe for the sides of their houses and roofs. The Dakota, Pawnee, Winnebago and Omaha-Ponca tribes used the inner bark for making ropes and cords, as well as for medicinal purposes, such as an eye wash for sore eyes.Slippery Elm Bark (Ulmus rubra) is a medium-sized forest tree native to North America. The inner bark contains a starchy carbohydrate substance called mucilage. When it’s mixed with water it swells and forms a slippery gel. Mucilage is used as a soothing demulcent.
